The Martin 130 China Clipper was built in answer to Pan American Airways desire to implement trans-Pacific services. Three examples were built. The inaugural service was from San Francisco to the Philippines in 1935, taking around 60 hours. All 3 examples were lost in accidents. One was lost near Manila in a storm, another flew into a California mountain returning from Pearl Harbor in fog and the third was inexplicably torn assunder landing at Port of Spain, Trinidad in early 1945.
