The Lockheed L-1011 TriStar, which first flew in 1970, was originally designed to meet US airline industry requirements for a transcontinental wide-body airliner. Because of financial crises at both Lockheed and Rolls-Royce, whose engines were used in the L-1011, there were lost orders. Consequently, only 250 examples were sold, but they served with distinction in many major carriers' fleets.
