A prototype of the Supermarine Spitfire first flew on March 5, 1936. The first Spitfire Mk Is were delivered to No 19 Squadron at Duxford in August 1938 and eight other squadrons had equipped with Spitfires by September 1939. Production of Mk Is eventually reached 1,566 aircraft. It was this variant that saw the most combat in the Battle of Britain.
