Despite a disastrous start to its operational career in the Battle of Midway in June 1942, when five of six aircraft were shot down in the attack on the Japanese task force, the Grumman TBF Avenger went on to become one of World War II's best shipborne torpedo-bombers. The XTBF-1 prototype was first flown on August 1, 1941 with an order of 286 aircraft already in place.
