The B-52 was the product of a USAAF requirement, issued in April 1946, for a new jet heavy bomber to replace the Convair B-36 in Strategic Air Command. The first prototype flew for the first time on April 15, 1952. For many years during the Cold War era, the B-52 provided the manned bomber component of the American strategic deterrent.
