In the 1960s and 1970s, the favourite toy of the rich “beautiful people” on the Côte d’Azur was the famous “Riva Aquarama”, a breathtaking mahogany beauty with leather seats and recliners, designed in 1963 by Italian shipbuilder Carlo Riva. With its powerful 800bhp engine, this 9m (30ft) yacht, 2.70m (9ft) wide, was capable of speeds of 70km/h (44mph), making it one of the fastest motorboats of its time.
