In 1957, Sikorsky was awarded a contract to develop an all-weather amphibious helicopter which could combine the hunter and killer roles within a single airframe. A prototype flew on March 11, 1959 and 245 SH-3As were built. An SH-3A, operating from the USS New Orleans amphibious assault ship, was used in the July 1975 Apollo spacecraft recovery mission.
