The Boeing-Stearman PT-17 Kaydet, built in 1940, was one of the most widely used basic trainers of World War II. The Kaydet was produced in several versions. The PT-27, with different instrumentation and an enclosed cockpit, was built for Canada. Production of all types reached 10,346 aircraft, and many PT-17 Kaydets are still in the hands of private owners.
