The Chinook was introduced in 1961, and was an outgrowth of the Boeing Vertol 107, which was developed as an all-weather battle-field mobility helicopter capable of carrying 40 fully equipped troops. In mid-1962, under the new service designating system, the HC-1 Chinook became the CH-47A for the US Army and the first deliveries were made in December of that same year.
