In February 1955 the US Army sought a new, more powerful utility helicopter with greater payload. Bell responded with the Model 204 and the first of three prototypes flew on October 20, 1956. The name Huey was derived from the HU prefix and remained so even though the designation was changed to UH-1 in 1962. Also in 1962, the Hueys were among the first helicopters sent to Vietnam and subsequently became the most important helicopters in Southeast Asia. The larger, more powerful Model 205 was developed in 1961 and the UH-1N variant was delivered to the USAF in 1970 and the USN, USMC and CAF in 1971.
