The original single-engined Fokker VII was designed to service KLM's long range routes, but the early version (of which five were built) proved slow. The tri-motor version F.VIIa-3m was developed in 1924 to a KLM specification to carry 10 passengers with one of its three engines shut down. The prototype went on to win the Ford reliability tour of the USA in 1925, and was modified to support Commander R.E. Bird's Arctic expedition in 1926.
