Launched in 1955, the DC-8 was Douglas's counter to the Boeing 707, which it trailed into service by just under a year. From the outset, it was offered as an over-water version. The DC-8s have enjoyed long and varied service lives. From 1984 it saw service with several French charters, and it was converted to use as a freighter in 1994.
