The famous Curtiss JN-4 'Jenny', which first flew in 1916, was the result of a 1914 US Army specification calling for a biplane trainer with a tractor engine. By the end of World War I, 7,471 examples had been built. The JN-4 saw operational service in 1916, supporting the US Expeditionary Force against the revolutionary army of Pancho Villa in Mexico.
