In 1919 a $25,000 prize was offered by Charles Ortieg, a New York-based hotel owner for the first crossing of the Atlantic Ocean by an aeroplane. It was not until 1927 that the combination of the right people and technological ability facilited the crossing from the US. Charles Lindbergh approached Ryan Airlines which designed and produced an M-2 high-wing monoplane mailplane. The NYP was ready April 1927 and was named 'Spirit of St Louis'. On May 20, 1927 he took off from NJ and 33 hours and 30 minutes later, the NYP landed at Le Bourget airfield near Paris. Lindbergh became a hero to millions around the world after making the first solo transatlantic crossing by air.
