The SPAD XIII, which was developed in May 1917, was the subject of some of the largest production contracts placed by any single aircraft type in World War I, and was the dominant type in terms of both numbers and performance in the last 18 months of hostilities. The SPAD XIII equipped more than 80 Escadrilles, and 8,472 were built. The type also equipped 16 squadrons of the American Expeditionary Force (893 examples).
