A prototype of Bell's Airacobra first flew in April 1939 and, although no orders were immediately forthcoming from the US military, France placed an order for 100 aircraft. Some of these were taken over by the RAF in 1941, but the type fell far short of British expectations. The Airacobra saw action with the USAAF in the south Pacific but were outperformed on almost every count by the Mitsubishi A6M Zero. The Soviet Union was supplied with 4,773 Airacobras under Lend-Lease and used them to very good effect. Colonel Aleksandr Pokryshkin gained most of his 59 victories while flying this type. Total production of all variants were 9,558 aircraft.
