In September 1945, Boeing commenced design of a strategic jet-bomber project. The aircraft, which was a radical departure from conventional design, featured a thin, flexible wing based on wartime research data with 35 degrees of sweep and carrying six turbojets in underwing pods, the main undercarriage being housed in the fuselage. The first prototype flew on December 17, 1947. The B-47E was the most numerous version (1,359) and first flew on January 30, 1953.
