The most widely used advanced trainer in the world, the Lockheed T-33 first flew in 1948 and was developed from the F-80C Shooting Star. It is estimated that some 90% of the West's military jet pilots, and friendly foreign pilots from other nations, trained on the T-33 during the 1950s and 1960s. T-33 production totalled 5,691 in the US alone; many others were built under license in Canada and Japan.
