Based on the Boeing 707 airliner, the KC-135 jet tanker first flew in August 1956. 724 production aircraft were built, their task to support SAC's B-52 fleet. The KC-135 Stratotanker is used primarily to re-fuel aircraft during flight. Modified KC-135s, however, serve as flying command posts, pure transport, electronic reconnaissance, and photo mapping craft.
